The proposed mechanism of action involves chloride efflux, depolarization of the mitochondrial and plasma membranes, and alterations to protein synthesis and cholesterol transport [ 29 59 ] .
Hormonal signal transduction and steroidogenesis can be affected by changes in intracellular and extracellular concentrations of inorganic ions, cellular resting membrane potential, and cell size [ 29 30 35 54 55 56 57 58 59 ] .
