Example sentences for: phagocytosis

How can you use “phagocytosis” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • Mycobacteria enter macrophages primarily by conventional receptor-mediated phagocytic pathways [ 3 ] . Following phagocytosis, phagosomes containing viable tubercle bacilli fail to acidify, apparently because of failure to insert a proton-ATPase pump into the phagosomal membrane [ 4 5 6 ] . This leads to altered vacuolar maturation such that phagosome-lysosome fusion is blocked and the mycobacteria-containing vacuoles end up with an internal pH of about 6 and markers of phagosomes and early and late endosomes [ 7 8 9 10 11 ] . The mycobacterial genes responsible for these processes are largely unknown.

  • 16, was cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (MEM; Life Technologies) supplemented with 10% defined fetal calf serum (Hyclone Laboratories) at 37°C in 5% CO 2 . Because phagocytosis of mycobacteria was shown to be enhanced with complement protein C3 [ 40 ] , macrophages were infected with M. paratuberculosis in the presence of 10% serum from a clinical cow with Johne's disease.

  • In Belize the crushed leaf of Petiveria alliacea is put on the dog's nose to improve its ability to follow a scent [ 109 ] . Kojoroot or Kudjuruk ( Petiveria alliacea ) is considered a charm and a medicine for aches, pain, snakebites and respiratory conditions in Dominica, Bolivia, Columbia, Peru and Eastern Nicaragua [ 16 96 53 108 ] . The plant can stimulate the phagocytosis activity of the reticulo-endothelelial system and has antibacterial effects [ 61 108 ] . The plant contains isoarborinol, isoarborinol-cinnamate and sulphide compounds, which give it a smell of onions or garlic [ 86 50 ] . The strong garlic smell may suggest the various uses of the plant (Doctrine of Signatures), however this aspect was not noted in the meticulous data compiled on Middle America [ 86 ] . It is difficult to assess which medicinal properties of the plant could help in making dogs more alert.

  • This approach provides a better opportunity to study the dynamic changes of oxidation and pH in phagolysosomes during phagocytosis, which can not be resolved by conventional biochemical analyses.

  • Tat has been shown to down-regulate mannose receptor, EDF-1, CD3-gamma, and TCR/CD3 surface receptor [ 14 ] . Tat reduces mannose receptor levels and promoter activity in mature macrophages and dendritic cells by interfering with the host transcriptional machinery; resulting in decreased levels of surface mannose receptor needed for Ag (mannosylated albumin uptake) or pathogen capture (Pneumocystis carinii phagocytosis), and eventual delivery to MHC class II-containing intracellular compartments [ 15 ] . EDF-1, a gene down-regulated when endothelial cells are induced to differentiate in vitro , was shown to be down-regulated by Tat at the transcriptional level, resulting in the inhibition of endothelial cell growth and in the transition from a nonpolar cobblestone phenotype to a polar fibroblast-like phenotype [ 16 ] .
