In a randomized trial aimed at examining the effect of aspirin in the prevention of cardiovascular disease in male physicians, Peto et al [ 17 ] first noted lower lung cancer mortality rates in the aspirin intervention group compared to the placebo group.
Although we cannot rule out more subtle effects on TGF-β activity, such as the activation of latent forms, the data suggest that TGF-βs are not involved in the underlying molecular mechanism of chemoprevention induced by these agents.
