Some of the discrepancy between the results of these high quality cohort studies and randomized trials may be explained by differences in the intervention, patient population, or duration of follow-up.

  • Correa et al [ 29 ] have clearly shown in a large trial conducted over six years that dietary antioxidant supplementation alone (vitamin C or beta-carotene), without antimicrobial therapy, can limit the progress of gastric cancer and actually may promote regression of precancerous states.

  • Intakes of fats, protein, fiber, several vitamins, including the antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, and minerals (especially magnesium, potassium, and zinc) are significantly different from the general population's dietary intake (see Table 1), so it is difficult to single out which factors were most important in producing the dramatic improvements seen in this study.
