How can you use “immunocompromised” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • Cryptosporidium oocysts have an ubiquitous geographic distribution and can be detected in most surface drinking water sources [ 8 ] . The oocysts are resistant to environmental degradation [ 9 ] , survive chlorination water treatment, and are too small (4 to 6 microns) to be removed by conventional water filters [ 6 ] . Risk factors for acquiring cryptosporidiosis have been determined primarily in studies of community-wide outbreaks, and drinking water has been implicated as the source of these outbreaks [ 9 10 11 12 13 14 ] . Case-control studies in AIDS patients have also been conducted during outbreaks [ 12 15 ] , but levels of endemic risk in the United States remain uncertain, even though there is great concern for diarrheal disease associated with drinking water in this population [ 16 17 ] . Because defining the risk associated with drinking tap water is particularly important for counseling immunocompromised patients on reducing their risk of cryptosporidiosis, we conducted a case-control study among persons with AIDS in San Francisco to test the hypothesis that the pattern of tap water consumption is associated with the development of endemic cryptosporidiosis.

  • Activated STAT5 proteins are detected in reduced levels in lymphocytes recovered from HIV-infected patients and immunocompromised mice.

  • In immunocompromised patients such as neonates, transplant recipients and patients with AIDS, CMV infections are a leading cause of organ failure and death.

  • This mutation has also been detected in clinical isolates from patients immunocompromised [ 12 ] or with AIDS [ 19 ] as well as resistant HSV selected in tissue culture [ 15 18 ] . Interestingly, this mutation was present in ACV rclinical isolates obtained during reactivation in the absence of drug pressure, as well as in ACV rstrains which evolved during ACV therapy and were followed by ACV-susceptible isolates at the next reactivation [ 19 ] .

  • A CMV infection, in vivo , can contribute to the net immunosuppressive status of the immunocompromised patient [ 11 ] . A CMV infection can result in the production of certain immune effector proteins (cytokines and chemokines) that may affect latency in the EBV infected B-cells [ 77 ] . The production of these cytokines and chemokines from a CMV superinfected BJAB-B1 or P3HR-1 cell may affect neighboring cells and therefore cause EBV reactivation, implying that CMV could be having an indirect effect on EBV latency.
