Phenol red in tissue culture media is a weak estrogen, sufficient to stimulate the proliferation of ERα+ MCF-7 human breast carcinoma cells [ 36 ] . In this regard, endocrine disrupters are environmental chemicals that mimic or modulate the physiological effects of steroid hormones, especially that of estrogens [ 23 24 ] . Of all of the considered estrogenic endocrine disrupters examined thus far, phytoestrogens have been extensively studied [ 23 24 ] (however, little research has been conducted examining VSM in relationship to phytoestrogens).
