In 1973, the National Council of Teachers of English established a Committee on Public Doublespeak to help identify and stamp out evasive and obfuscating terminology slithering out of public sources, such as “uncontrolled contact with the ground” for “airplane crash” and “inoperative statement” for “lie.”
