In mammals there are three Hh-family proteins: Sonic (Shh), Indian (Ihh), and Desert (Dhh).
The mammalian set of functionally diversified proteins, for which much more experimental information is available than for the bacterial and archaeal sets, is particularly enriched for secreted proteins, including several proteins involved in immune surveillance and defense (Table 2).
