Cortical astrocytes were harvested from neonatal C57BL/6 mice and infected with a replication-defective retrovirus encoding Tag and neomycin resistance as previously described [ 13 ] . The transferred viruses were SV40-6 [ 5 ] , in which wild type Tag is expressed from the M-MuLV LTR promoter; SV(X)T K1, which is constructed the same as SV40-6 except that the Tag is mutant [ 38 ] and defective for binding the retinoblastoma protein family [ 39 ] ; Linker-tkT, in which the cDNA for Tag is expressed from the herpes simplex 1 tk promoter [ 11 ] . The differentiation and transformation phenotypes of the cell lines utilizing the M-MuLV LTR promoter have been described [ 6 13 ] . The Linker-tkT lines (tkT) were either isolated as clones after G418 selection (as previously described) [ 6 ] or frozen immediately after selection (pooled clones) and clonally selected at a later time.
Frequent infection with herpesviruses has long been recognized in patients undergoing allogeneic transplantation [ 7 8 ] and in patients with acute leukemia [ 1 2 ] . In patients with acute leukemia it has been reported that as many as two thirds of seropositive patients can develop reactivation of herpes simplex virus infection during remission induction therapy [ 26 ] . The risk of CMV infection in acute leukemia patients was recognized almost 30 years ago [ 27 ] but is of particular concern in patients undergoing allogeneic transplantation [ 2 28 ] . EBV infection is frequently associated with post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorders in T cell-depleted grafts [ 29 ] . As recently reported, HHV-6 can also be associated with bone marrow supression [ 30 ] , encephalitis and pneumonitis [ 7 8 ] after allogeneic transplantation.
Plasmid pVP16-mRXR encodes a fusion protein between the transcriptional transactivator VP16 from Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and the mouse RXR protein.
For instance, viruses including Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) have been known to induce severe alterations of the host translational apparatus, including the up-regulation of ribosomal proteins and the progressive association of several nonribosomal proteins, such as VP19C, VP26, and the poly(A)-binding protein 1 (PAB1P) to ribosomes [ 39 ] . In the case of HIV-1, approximately one infectious HIV-1 genome in an infected cell could be transcribed and translated into 50,000 to 100,000 physical particles [ 40 ] . This poses an immense challenge for the virus to be able to transcribe, splice, transport, and translate its RNA into fully packaged virions in a timely fashion.
In addition to RD, risk loci for Behçet's disease [ 18 ] , inflammatory bowel disease (IBD3) [ 19 20 ] , hypotrichosis simplex (HSS) [ 21 ] , insulin dependent type 1 diabetes mellitus [ 22 ] , attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) [ 23 ] and schizophrenia [ 24 ] have all been assigned to this general chromosomal location by genetic linkage analysis.
