How can you use “prothrombotic” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:
Because it is biologically plausible that a prothrombotic polymorphism may exert a differential effect across different ages, sexes, and ethnic groups, we classified studies as having positive results even if they had only one positive subgroup.
The effects of PGs on cell proliferation and collagen production have been widely studied in different cell types [ 13 14 15 16 17 26 ] . TXA 2 has been studied extensively because of its apparent role in atherosclerosis, due to its prothrombotic and mitogenic activities on vascular smooth muscle cells [ 15 16 ] . These mitogenic effects are potentiated by growth factors [ 15 16 27 28 ] . In vascular smooth muscle cells TXA 2 stimulates synthesis of bFGF and increases the expression of the proto-oncogenes c-fos , c-myc , and egr-1 , which are associated with entry into the cell growth cycle [ 15 ] . In addition, TXA 2 increases proliferation of fibroblasts [ 13 ] and smooth muscle-like glomerular mesangial cells [ 14 ] .
The metabolic syndrome is a condition that promotes atherosclerosis and increases the risk of cardiovascular events [ 1 2 3 ] . According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 47 million Americans, or about one in five people, have this condition [ 1 ] . Contributors to the development of the metabolic syndrome may include genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, a Western diet (high in refined carbohydrates, low in fiber, and high in saturated fat), cigarette smoking, and progressive weight gain [ 2 ] . The characteristics of the metabolic syndrome include atherogenic dyslipidemia, a prothrombotic state, insulin resistance, hypertension, and abdominal obesity [ 3 4 ] . Each abnormality promotes atherosclerosis independently, but when clustered together, these metabolic disorders are increasingly atherogenic and enhance the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality [ 1 ] . Based on observational studies there is evidence to support that several factors related to lifestyle habits may influence cardiovascular risk [ 5 6 7 ] . Among these factors the beneficial effect of several dietary patterns on human health, have already been underlined [ 8 9 10 ] . One of these diets, the Mediterranean diet, has received much attention during the past decades.
Just as the small absolute risks of thrombosis attributable to oral contraceptives and prothrombotic mutations may interact dramatically [5], selective inhibitors of COX-2 may also interact with genetic and environmental factors that predispose to the risk of thrombosis.
However, documented genetic risk factors, such as abnormalities in lupus anticoagulant, anti-thrombin III, proteins C and S, plasma homocysteine, anticardiolipin, β2 glycoprotein antibody, and prothrombotic mutations in Factor V and prothrombin were excluded.
