For these reasons it is not be expected that all anionic polymers, considered as anti-HIV-1 microbicides, would have similar biological activities.
Such studies were expected to elucidate further the mechanisms involved in the antiviral/virucidal activity of CAP and to contribute to the potential development of microbicides combining two or more anti-HIV-1 compounds with distinct target sites.
This includes the design and application of safe and effective topical microbicides.
Consideration of these side effects might contribute to the process of selection of preferred microbicides for future large-scale use.
