  • In the case of β-thymosin, a sequence signature also has been argued to support a grouping of Drosophila and Caenorhabditis [ 12 ] . However, it is a gene family known to have paralogs within animals, the position of introns differs between sequences from the two species, and only four other metazoan taxa were surveyed.

  • Intron phase is distributed quite randomly in the 5' half of the sequence, although toward the 3' end of the gene, phase o introns become prevalent.

  • The introns are organized by intron type, as defined above, in rRNA Introns Table 2 (H-3E.

  • Approximately 75% (623) of these genes have a single intron, 15% (127) have two introns, 0.5% (40) have three, 0.25% (20) have four, 0.1% (11) have five, two rRNA genes have 6, 7 or 8 introns, and one rRNA gene has 9 introns.

  • With our data set of 49 (two diatom-specific introns were excluded from this analysis) different spliceosomal intron sites in the SSU and LSU rRNAs of Euascomycetes (alignment available at http://www.rna.icmb.utexas.edu/ANALYSIS/FUNGINT/(for registration details please see http://www.rnq.icmb.utexas.edu/cgi-access/access/locked.cgi), we first tested for the presence of a proto-splice site flanking the introns [ 12 ] . In this chi-square analysis, the null hypothesis specified that nucleotide usage in 50 nt of exon sequence upstream and downstream of the different intron insertion sites was random and dependent on the nucleotide composition of Euascomycetes SSU and LSU rRNA sequences in general.
