This hypothesis is based on findings that only those glucose analogs that are believed to be substrates for phosphorylation by hexokinases are effective in repressing alpha-amylase expression [ 37 ] . However, the role of hexokinases in sugar responses remains under debate [ 38 39 40 ] .
