How can you use “crossovers” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • Crossover recombination (reciprocal exchange) generates chiasmata, physical connections between homologs, which provide the primary mechanism to ensure proper segregation of homologs during MI [ 1 ] . In the absence of chiasmata (crossovers), homologous chromosomes experience nondisjunction and segregate randomly from their partners.

  • This is partly how we know that homologous crossovers in yeast and other eukaryotes are initiated by the cleavage of single chromosomes, called “double-strand breaks” (Box 1).
