How can you use “allusions” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • Reference to the designated section in Appendix A reveals a brief discussion of the subject of sex-linked metaphors which quite correctly points out that many common metaphors, metonyms, and allusions refer to males— Achilles' heel, before you can say Jack Robinson, Bluebeard, David and Goliath , and many more.

  • Other quizzes “test” the knowledge of the reader's knowledge of gay, black, or carnival slang, of the origins of certain words ( topaz matches up with “Greek for `conjecture' because they could only guess where it came from”), some of tautological clichés (like beck and --), others of nautical jargon, euphemisms, numerical allusions, Yankee dialect, and so forth.

  • Costumes have more scope, however; some tend toward approximations of current fashion, with many ponytails, little bandeaux under boleros, and several bare midriffs, along with S&M trappings in better or worse arrangements, and a range of recent and remote historical allusions.
