How can you use “tocopherol” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:
The adherent cells in the well were washed three times with 1.0 ml of PBS, and the cells overlaid with 400 μl of lysis buffer (1% Triton X-100 in pH 7.5, 20 mM HEPES buffer with 0.1 mM EDTA), scraped, and collected into a glass vial for tocopherol analysis by HPLC, and for protein determination by the BCA protein assay (Pierce, Rockford, IL).
The changes in tocopherol levels (expressed as nmoles/well) in the medium were also measured during both the uptake and depletion phases and these data are provided in Tables 1(for alpha-tocopherol or gamma-tocopherol) and 2(for alpha-tocopherol plus gamma-tocopherol).
To define the time course of tocopherol (or tocopheryl quinone) accumulation, adherent cells (2 × 10 6/well) were subcultured in 12 well falcon tissue culture plates with medium enriched with about 5 μM tocopherol (or about 0.5 μM quinone) (3 ml/well).
It is a mixture of eight stereoisomers in equal amounts designated "dl" or all-rac tocopherol and does have antioxidant properties [ 4 ] . Thus, different forms of vitamin E can have different antioxidant properties as well as differences in their absorption, distribution, and metabolism [ 4 ] . There are also reports that some forms of vitamin E have activity against cancer cells in vitro [ 3 5 ] . For example, tocotrienol and vitamin E succinate are reported to have antiproliferative activity in human cancer cells whereas some forms of vitamin E are reported to induce apoptosis in cancer cell types but not in normal cell types [ 3 ] . Specifically, these apoptogenic forms include RRR-α-tocopheryl succinate and RRR-δ-tocopherol while the α, β, and γ tocopherol and acetate derivatives of tocopherol were not apoptogenic [ 3 ] . There are few reports on the use of vitamin E for treating tumorous cancers in vivo but the results are inconsistent [ 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 ] . It is therefore essential that the form of vitamin E used in any research study as well as the dosage and the mode of administration be defined.
Since gamma-tocopherol is depleted from macrophages more rapidly than alpha-tocopherol the time interval between removal of the tocopherol enriched medium and cell harvesting could be an important variable.
