How can you use “slang” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • The vocabulary is jocular in its easy mixture of the casual (in slang or coinages or abbreviations), the learned (in avatar, baroque, catatonic, synchronous ), the visual (in hieroglyphics or emoticons), and even the aural (in the fondness for explosives, like bang , common spoken name for !) or onomatopoeia ( bletch, glitch, gonk ).

  • These words may be of only academic interest and of no practical use till one gets some bird (short for birdlime , rhyming slang for time ), in which case an interpreter will be unnecessary.

  • Neither was the term cited in any of the many references I examined, until I saw Dennis Anderson's “The Book of Slang,” Jonathan David Publishers, Inc., Middle Village, NY, 1975.

  • The value of the book is not diminished by its being about British slang, but, considering the percentage of the content that is attributable to American, Australian, and Canadian slang (mostly), that part of native British slang that does not emerge as derivative has an old-fashioned ring to it.

  • Words like gammon and piccaninny , from English slang and African pidgin respectively, joined a range of Port Jackson words to form a pidgin in which limited communication was possible.
