How can you use “scotticisms” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • Early in this century Funk & Wagnalls published dictionaries that contained a large number of Scotticisms, either out of habit or affection for the genre or because their lexicographers felt that every student who read Burns had to be able to find in the dictionary every word he used.

  • Some conservative dictionaries published earlier in the 20th century listed a huge number of Scotticisms on the (justifiable) grounds that they would be useful in reading Burns; but most school editions containing Burns's poetry later on supplied glosses, so an ancillary reference proved unnecessary.

  • These days, when all editions of Burns's poems are annotated, with glosses for any “foreign” words, allowing such Scotticisms to occupy valuable space in general dictionaries is not considered economical, and only those likely to appear in crossword puzzles are included.

  • Of course, not all Scotticisms have been excised, and words like auld, land , and syne are probably still to be found in many dictionaries, but only because they are frequent.

  • Pat Rogers (University of South Florida) provides Boswell's attitude to and use of Scotticisms both in writing and in speech; at one time, we are told, Boswell considered compiling a dictionary of words peculiar to the Scottish tongue.
