For example, viral IL-6 might be incorporated into the genomes of prostatic carcinomas, as has been described for Kaposi sarcoma [ 5 32 33 39 40 41 ] . The route of introduction of the viral IL-6 is believed to be through previous herpesvirus infection [ 39 41 ] . Another possibility is that the insertion of the oncogene BRCA1 results in the constitutive activation of STAT3 in NRP-154 cells, as has been described in Du-145 prostate cancer cells [ 42 ] . Du-145 cells do not make IL-6; nor are they dependent upon it for continued proliferation in vitro.
First, our viral backbone is a modified MoMLV vector that incorporates genetic elements (myeloproliferative sarcoma virus long-terminal repeats and B2 mutation) associated with resistance to transcriptional silencing following proviral integration in primary cells [ 7 8 ] . While we did not perform a detailed comparison of EGFP expression in FLS using the modified and unmodified vector backbones, preliminary experiments suggested that the modified vector was superior (J Yang, unpublished observations).
Indeed, the CD4+ T cells that directly destroy MHCII-positive tumors were identified [ 5 ] . In the clinic, the expression of MHCII on colorectal carcinomas is correlated with more favourable prognosis [ 6 ] . Adoptive transfer studies show that ex vivo activated CD4+ T cells are able to recognize, and to eliminate, MHCII-positive tumors either by themselves [ 7 ] or in co-operation with CD8+ T cells [ 8 ] . It has been also demonstrated that the increased MHCII expression on tumor cells and macrophages following treatment with IFNg in vivo was associated with enhanced efficacy of adoptive T cell therapy in a mouse model of metastatic sarcoma [ 9 ] .
For example, early investigators observed that transfection of untransformed B cells with a plasmid for constitutive expression of IL-6 conferred the tumorigenic phenotype on the cells [ 2 ] . IL-6 is a key factor in myeloma progression and survival [ 3 4 ] , and also in Kaposi's sarcoma, a solid tumor [ 5 ] . In myeloma, the standard therapy for treatment includes prednisone, which acts by inhibiting IL-6 synthesis.
Blacks with HIV infection have a lower risk of cancer developing than nonblacks [ 22 ] . Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are the most common malignancies, and they are epidemiologically linked to HIV.
