Example sentences for: participle

How can you use “participle” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • The same can be said of certain other of Pepys's locutions, for example the past participle gotten instead of got: “..

  • We would say, for example, that gone in He has gone is a past participle but an adjective in He is gone (if only because English does not use the verb to be as an auxiliary, the way French does); alleged in it was alleged is clearly a past participle, but in the alleged culprit it is an adjective.

  • Filmed is here intended as a past participle, not the past of an active verb.

  • I excused myself at once, left Roger in Cupid's hands and went over to check out another participle I'd noticed dangling by the bar.

  • This feature has already been demonstrated in the very first example (the cock that crows) and also in clue F. Clue J offers two further instances: at first reading, changed is suggestive of being a past tense but after analysis it is identified as a past participle (serving as an anagram flag); likewise, quarterly shifts from adverb to noun.
