How can you use “otitis” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:
Some authors have proposed that in otitis media with effusion, nontypeable H. influenzae grow in the form of a biofilm in the middle ear [ 15 22 23 ] .
Different serogroups have vastly different frequencies among pneumococci isolated from carriage [12,15,16,17] and otitis media [12,18]; for example, serogroups 4 and 18 and the non-vaccine serogroups are isolated far less commonly than several of the other pneumococcal types identified in Figure 1. One could postulate that these differences in frequency of carriage are offset by differences in immunogenicity; however, there is little evidence that serotypes 4 or 18C are more immunogenic than other, far more common serotypes [4,15].
However, assays using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have demonstrated that DNA of nontypeable H. influenzae is present in a substantial proportion of these middle ear fluids [ 15 16 17 18 19 20 ] . Furthermore, reverse transcriptase PCR-based assays have shown the presence of bacterial mRNA, indicating that bacteria are present in a viable and metabolically active but non-culturable state [ 21 ] . These observations suggest that in otitis media with effusion, bacteria are in a physiological state which differs from that of bacteria growing planktonically in a free floating phase.
More importantly, care for many respiratory conditions (especially otitis media and acute bronchitis) was captured in this study only as a complication of previously recognized influenza/ILI.
Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae is an important human respiratory tract pathogen [ 1 2 3 4 ] . The bacterium causes acute otitis media as established by pure culture of the organism from middle ear fluid during disease [ 5 6 7 8 9 ] . In addition, nontypeable H. influenzae has been implicated as a cause of otitis media with effusion, which refers to the presence of fluid in the middle ear in the absence of acute symptoms.
