How can you use “hearer” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:

  • For example, the sentence Pass to the left of the tower is ambiguous because left can mean either the speaker's left or the hearer's left; but further confusion is also possible, because left can sound very much like west .

  • I am not persuaded that a speaker who offends a hearer's sensibilities directly suffers loss of face: loss of face could come about only by some retaliatory action of the hearer's.
