Epigenetic inactivation of promoter hypermethylation of APC and HIC1 also results in MSI phenotype in sporadic colorectal cancers [ 39 40 ] . Accumulating evidence supports the view that promoter methylation of mismatch repair genes may be related to MSI phenotype [ 41 42 ] . A number of previous studies have shown the existence of MSI phenotype in CC [ 43 44 ] . In the present study, we found that MSI-H occurs at an increased frequency in tumors with HIC1 and APC promoter hypermethylation.

  • This pattern is consistent with the smaller-scale clustering found for females relative to males under the local Moran test [ 1 ] . For example, there were 3 clusters of female colorectal cancer, each comprised of from 3 to 4 ZIP codes [1, Table 1], vs. 5 clusters of male colorectal cancer, each comprised of from 3 to 7 ZIP codes [1, Table 2].

  • Various studies have reported increased levels of prostaglandins and COX-2 expression in colorectal adenomas and adenocarcinomas obtained both from animals [ 40 41 ] and humans [ 42 43 44 ] . These findings have lead to the implication that COX-2 plays an important role in intestinal neoplasia and that the anti-neoplastic effects of NSAIDs are attributable to their ability to inhibit COX-2.
