How can you use “coenzyme” in a sentence? Here are some example sentences to help you improve your vocabulary:
Three published [ 1 2 3 ] and one recently presented [ 4 ] randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial have unequivocally demonstrated that 3-Hydroxy-3-methylgluatryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with coronary disease.
This suggests that double bonds are not required to observe the effect of fatty acyl coenzyme A esters.
In the case of pNPP hydrolysis, others have reported both saturated and unsaturated fatty acyl coenzyme A esters stimulate PP5 activity, with concentrations required for half-maximal stimulation approximately 10-fold lower than those of their corresponding free fatty acids [ 21 ] . We therefore tested whether a saturated fatty acyl coenzyme A ester could also stimulate Ppt1p.
It is generally accepted that the hydroxy acid form of statins are potent inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, an enzyme that plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism, where they block substrate accessibility to HMG-CoA reductase, effectively subverting cholesterol levels of HDL [ 19 20 21 ] . In addition to lowering cholesterol, statins seem to have a number of additional effects, such as the nitric oxide-mediated promotion of new blood vessel growth [ 22 ] , protection against oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein, as well as anti-inflammatory effects and a reduction in C-reactive protein levels [ 23 ] . All statins limit cholesterol biosynthesis by inhibiting the committed step in the biosynthesis of isoprenoids and sterols [ 24 ] .
Although more work is required to examine this issue thoroughly, our results suggest that the large differences in potency between free fatty acids and fatty acyl coenzyme A esters seen using pNPP may not extend to all protein substrates.
